Preparation

  • Cut the French bread into thick slices (about 1-1.5 inches thick).
  • Grease your baking dish generously with butter.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined.
  • Arrange the bread slices in the baking dish and pour the custard mixture over them, ensuring they are well soaked.
  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the French toast for 30-35 minutes until golden and set.
  • In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and butter until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle the mixture over the baked French toast and broil for 2-3 minutes until caramelized.

Serving

  • Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then serve warm, optionally topped with fresh fruit or syrup.

Notes

For best results, use quality bread and don’t rush the soaking process. Monitor the broiler closely to prevent burnt sugar.
