  • Oil for frying neutral oil (vegetable or canola) Avoid fancy oils since we are frying.

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter until combined.
  • Combine the wet and dry mixtures until a dough forms.
  • Dust the countertop with flour and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut the dough into desired shapes.
  • Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan over medium heat.

Cooking

  • Gently drop in the cut shapes and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Remove the pastries with a slotted spoon and let drain on paper towels.
  • Coat the warm pastries in sugar.

Serving

  • Serve and enjoy immediately with a sprinkle of powdered sugar on top.
